A passage from ‘Home’ read within sight of the Iolaire tragedy. On New Year’s Day 1919 after 4 terrible years of war, the lads from Lewis and Harris were returning home on the Admiralty yacht, The Iolaire. Within sight of the lights of home the vessel foundered on rocks at the entrance to Stornoway Harbour. More than 200 were drowned.

The Road Dance Trailer

Life in the Scottish Hebrides is harsh - the edge of the world some call it. For the beautiful Kirsty, her love for Murdo and their shared dreams of America promise escape from the scrape of the land and a stifled destiny. But the Great War changes all when Murdo is conscripted. The night before the young men go off to battle, tragedy is set in motion as villagers swirl and sup at a “road dance.” Based on the acclaimed novel by John MacKay, The Road Dance is adapted for the screen and directed by Richie Adams.

The Filming of The Road Dance

STV News presenter John MacKay swapped the studio for a film set on the Isle of Lewis. The newsreader filmed a cameo role in ‘The Road Dance’, a big screen adaptation of a novel he wrote almost 20 years ago. Inspired by a true story, The Road Dance follows a tragedy which befalls a woman and her newborn baby, set amid the outbreak of WWI. American company Sheridan Road Productions bought the rights to the novel and filming started on the Outer Hebrides island this week. John explained: “We’ve got technician and actors from all over the world, they’ve come to this place to bring the story that was in my imagination to life. “It’s absolutely thrilling.”
